Объединение рабовладельческих штатов Юга [South], отделившихся от Союза [Union] в декабре 1860 - мае 1861. Южная Каролина была первым штатом, вышедшим из состава США после избрания Линкольна [Lincoln, Abraham] президентом. За ней последовали Миссисипи, Флорида, Алабама, Джорджия, Луизиана, Техас, Вирджиния, Арканзас, Теннесси и Северная Каролина. Мятежники в Миссури и Кентукки образовали правительства в изгнании, которые также присоединились к Конфедерации, хотя сами штаты официально не выходили из Союза. Когда Вирджиния вышла из Союза, в г. Уилинг на западе штата был созван конвент, который объявил о создании нового штата "Канова" [Kanawha], оставшегося в Союзе (в 1863 принят в Союз как штат Западная Вирджиния). 4 февраля 1861 был созван конституционный конвент в г. Монтгомери, шт. Алабама - столице Конфедерации. Дж. Дэвис [Davis, Jefferson] был избран президентом. 11 марта была принята Конституция, которая предусматривала широкие права штатов. 4 февраля 1861 Конфедерация артиллерийским обстрелом форта Самтер [Fort Sumter] начала Гражданскую войну [Civil War]. Дэвис был переизбран в ноябре и переехал в новую столицу - г. Ричмонд, шт. Вирджиния. Несмотря на успехи в экономической политике и военные победы в начальный период, Конфедерация практически подошла к последней черте еще до военного поражения в 1865.
